It is painful to see how people retaliate like this over marriage. Also, it may be deeper than just wanting to keep a wife that doesn't even want you. I think that the husband may have had mental health issues that led him to attachment problems with his estranged wife. He should have worked on himself instead of blaming his wife who tried to split cleanly.
